Two-month Review of Being Self/Un-Employed
All in all this is nothing like what I expected which can be taken either way really.. To be honest, I guess I didn’t really know what to expect, I just sort of assumed it would be a ruthless hustle. I can see the hustle out there, I know it’s a bitch, but it just hasn’t crept up on me yet. I’ve had some killer support from friends like Joel, Chris and Adam.. As well as complete strangers outside of the internet helping me open doors I previously would have never been able to even approach. So instead of a dog eat dog battle for projects like I expected, friends have been more than happy to unload stuff here and there to support a brother. Top notch BFF action, many beers owed.
I work about 3.5-4 days (and/or nights) per week now which vary anywhere from 4 to 12 hours. I spend the other days picking up the pieces of my own life and trying to get a lonnnnng list of my own projects out of the way. A major plus is that somehow I am actually making a nice bit more after-taxes than I was when working full time. I’m not trying to gloat here, but it’s a crazy feeling “living the life” and making it actually work for me. I’m only 2 months in so it’s really tough to judg it yet.. But it’s 60 degrees out and I’m gonna go play frisbee with my dog again and continue to make my own hours. Good stuff, I’ll take it.

Thank you for posting this and sharing it. It’s an inspiration to me because I’ve been wanting to go solo for quite a while and always chicken out and come up with some fear to not do it.
I have a few clients on the side which I know I could be giving much better service to if I just did it.
I hope you keep sharing your progress along the way. My goal is for next spring to just do it finally.
